The 48th UKLA International Conference
Crossing Places: Literacy, Life and School
University of Leicester
Friday 6th to Sunday 8th
July 2012
The conference title, Crossing
Places invites contributors to explore the connections/disconnections
between literacy practices and events in homes, schools, communities and to
consider the implications for literacy pedagogies and approaches. The
conference falls at a time of change for us both in the UK and internationally
as new curriculum policies are implemented in many countries. In itself, this
conference offers new opportunities to critique the different ways in which
literacy is taught, is needed and is used in real lives beyond school.
As this is an international
conference it will draw together fields of study that focus on inclusive and
socially aware approaches to literacy across the globe. It will provide a
forum for such approaches to speak to each other, to find correspondences and
differences, and to share effective ways forward.
Colleagues from all areas
of education will be able to discuss, debate and explore these issues at a
critical moment in our educational history. The main conference theme offers many different threads including:
- The fields of multimodality and New Literacies
- Implications of educational reform
- Approaches to literacy in a world of increasing diversity and social change
- Policy and practice
- Implications of changes to Initial Teacher Training
- The interaction and discontinuities between literacy practices outside and inside educational institutions
Confirmed keynote
speakers are Joanne Larson, Victoria J Risko, Morag Styles, Beverley Naidoo, as
well as a writers’ panel chaired by Teresa Cremin and Debra Myhill.
